Wimbledon 2016 – Who do you think will come out on top?

With the excitement of the French Open behind us, tennis fans are looking forward to the next Grand Slam. Famous for its strawberries and cream, as well as its enthralling grass court action, Wimbledon 2016 takes place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London between 27 June and 10 July 2016.

Can Murray Steal a Grand Slam Title from Djokovic?

The current Men’s Singles title-holder, Novac Djokovic, is likely to be the favourite to win the Challenge Cup this year. Not only has the Serbian won the celebrated tennis trophy on three occasions, he also became the first male player since Rod Laver, back in 1969, to hold all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously, when he beat Andy Murray in the 2016 French Open this month.

Djokovic will be keen to hang onto his title as, if he retains it and then wins the US Open in September, he’ll achieve a calendar year Grand Slam too. Can anyone thwart his plans when he takes to the court at London’s All England Club?

Andy Murray, fresh from winning his fifth title at Queen’s, will be hoping that he can. The Scottish player became the first Brit in 77 years to win the Men’s Singles trophy when he beat Djokovic in straight sets in the 2013 final. Ivan Lendl, who won eight Grand Slam titles himself, has become his coach again after Murray and Amelie Mauresmo parted ways in May. Lendl helped Murray to achieve his first Wimbledon win, as well as to claim the gold medal at the London Olympics and the 2012 US Open title, so could the Scot now have embarked upon a new winning streak?

Rafael Nadal won’t be competing, due to a left wrist injury, and whilst Roger Federer is always a dangerous opponent, lack of recent match play could affect his performance. Players to watch out for, however, include the 19-year old German tennis sensation, Alexander Zverev Jr., Milos Raonic, Richard Gasquet and Dominic Thiem.

Can Serena Williams Secure a Seventh Wimbledon Win?

The famous American won the Ladies Singles Championship for the sixth time in 2015, but she’ll be facing tough competition for the title this year. Garbiñe Muguruza will be keen to make Serena pay for defeating her in last year’s final, and the Spaniard proved that she can beat Williams when she won the 2016 French Open.

Petra Kvitova is always a threat on grass and, although her form has been patchy recently and she exited this month’s Birmingham WTA Tournament in the second round, she has taken the title twice before. Victoria Azarenka’s fitness to participate was always questionable, as she was forced to retire in the first round of the French Open and withdrew from the AEGON Open in Nottingham and she has now confirmed that she will not participate at Wimbledon 2016.

Other threats to Serena’s Ladies Singles campaign at Wimbledon 2016 could come from players such as Kiki Bertens, Timea Bacsinszky, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep and, of course, her sister, Venus.

Can Lleyton Hewitt Achieve a Wild Card Win at Wimbledon 2016?

The renowned championship’s not just about the singles matches, however. The five main events include the men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions too – and one pairing that will ensure the Aussies in the crowd are in good voice is that of Lleyton Hewitt and Jordan Thompson. Hewitt technically retired in January, so to clinch the doubles trophy on a wild card would be a dream end to his career.
