Who will win the chase for the final Major of the year at Quail Hollow?

This week sees the years golfing majors come to a close, with one of the sternest tests on the calendar – the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, North Carolina. Throughout the blog we are going to look at what the key to success is around this 7600-yard Par 71, who the main contenders are and also throw in a few fun facts along the way! What does it take to win at Quail Hollow?

Distance. Plain and simple. Traditionally Quail Hollow favours the players who are longest off the tee, you only have to look at the past few winners on tour here, to see that being long off the tee here goes a long way!

There have been a few changes to a number of the holes but this shouldn’t worry any of the favourites too much, notable ex-winners around the track include McIlroy, Holmes, Fowler, Glover and of course Tiger Woods.

Who are the Favourites and why?

Rory McIlroy

Coming off the back of a couple of good weeks on tour Rory is as ever seen as the favourite. Quail Hollow has played witness to 2 wins for Rory with a loss in a play-off in-between for the 28-year-old. Some concerns have been raised about his iron and wedge play within 150 yards, but with the course playing long as expected, even with Rory’s power, this shouldn’t cost him.

Jordan Spieth

Could Spieth become the youngest Pro ever to reach the career Grand Salm? Chasing a career grand slam is no easy task, and it’s been difficult for McIlroy to live up to expectations at Augusta since he had the opportunity to secure his own from 2015 onwards. But Jordan Spieth is something extra special, as we were again reminded last month after a scintillating finish at Royal Birkdale which saw him lift the Claret Jug for the first time. Although he may not have the as positive record as some of his Competition round QH, you cannot rule him out!

Rickie Fowler

Like Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler secured his first PGA Tour title at this week’s host venue and it could well be that his first major also arrives at Quail Hollow. Rickie has held his form brilliantly all year with a strong top 10 finish last time out, this form in the majors speaks volume too with a finish no lower than T22 in 3 outings so far. Fowler, who is putting as well as when placing in all four majors three years ago, is good enough to get the job done very soon and those ties with the course confirm that this week’s PGA Championship provides another massive opportunity.
