The 2019 St Leger Stakes – The Potential Trophy Winners

The final horse racing English Classic of the year – the 2019 St Leger Stakes – takes place at 15.35 on Saturday at Doncaster Racecourse. So, who will be competing in it?

The Probable Runners and Riders in the St Leger Stakes

At the time of writing, eleven horses were set to battle for the coveted horse racing trophy:

  • Logician – The favourite in the run-up to the race, Logician will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, who has five St Leger Stakes titles to his name. Trained by John Gosden, this horse is the son of Frankel and won the Great Voltigeur Stakes last month.
  • Sir Dragonet – One of six horses in the line-up to have been trained by Aidan O’Brien, who also trained six former St. Leger winners, Sir Dragonet won the Chester Vase in May, before finishing fifth in the Epsom Derby and fourth in the Royal Whip Stakes.
  • Il Paradiso – This colt from O’Brien’s stables put on an impressive performance at the Lonsdale Cup in August, finishing third. Bookmakers reported receiving a flurry of bets on him when his participation in the St. Leger Stakes was announced.
  • Sir Ron Priestley – Franny Norton will be riding this three-year-old, which has been trained by Mark Johnston – and that partnership has yielded results before. Norton has been the jockey the last four times that Sir Ron Priestley’s been first past the post, with their wins including a handicap at Haydock Park in July and the March Stakes at Goodwood in August.
  • Technician – Thankfully for trainer Martyn Meade, the bug that prevented stablemate, Advertise, from racing in last weekend’s Haydock Sprint Cup hasn’t caused Technician any problems. Whilst this horse underperformed in this year’s Chester Vase and Gordon Stakes events, he won the Geoffrey Freer Stakes. Rob Hornby will be riding him in the race.
  • Dashing Willoughby – The winner of the 2019 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, this Andrew Balding-trained horse will be ridden by William Buick, who won the 2010 and 2011 St Leger Stakes.
  • Norway – The third of Aidan O’Brien’s title contenders, Norway finished eighth in the Epsom Derby, third in the Great Voltigeur Stakes and ninth in the Queen’s Vase this year.
  • Nayef Road – Trained by Mark Johnston, Nayef Road will be ridden by Andrea Atzeni. While this horse was third in the Queen’s Vase race and won the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood this year, he also finished last in his most recent outing in York.
  • South Pacific – The fourth entrant from Aidan O’Brien’s stables, this horse last raced in July’s Goodwood Cup, where he only managed to finish in sixth place. In June, however, he triumphed in Ascot’s King George V Stakes, so he can put in a trophy-winning performance on his day.
  • Barbados – O’Brien’s fifth contender finished second to Dashing Willoughby in the 2019 Queen’s Vase. More recently, he was fourth in the Bahrain Trophy Stakes at Newmarket.
  • Western Australia – The last of O’Brien’s St Leger hopes, this colt has only won two races so far. The first was a maiden at Gowran Park in September 2018, while the second was Irish Stallion Farms EBF Yeats Stakes at Navan earlier this year.
