Peterborough Beat Chesterfield to take the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy

Darren Ferguson has picked up where his father left off when it comes to winning trophies, earning Peterborough their first piece of silverware since 1974. With Sir Alex watching, Boro did just enough to edge past Chesterfield and pick up the trophy at Wembley yesterday, and their fans will be hoping that this isn’t their only trip to the stadium this season. The last team to follow their glory in this competition with a promotion were Birmingham City in 1995, and Peterborough will need to use this victory as a springboard to turn around their recent dip of form in the league. Chesterfield, on the other hand, will be hoping they’re not making a return to Wembley in May, with their sights firmly set on a top-three finish.

Chesterfield were more than a match for the side in the tier above them, and they could have gone in on level terms at the break, had it not been for a couple of missed chances; and by the time Peterborough had been reduced to 10 men in the second half, there was just too much to do.

The league one team went 1-nil up from a corner, Brisley’s header was palmed away by the Chesterfield keeper, only for Josh McQuoid to finish the rebound. Brisley did grab a goal himself not long after, rising high to head home from another set piece.

Early in the second half Chesterfield gave themselves hope, Doyle converting a Morsy cross. And it looked even more promising for the league two outfit when their opponents were reduced to 10 men. Joe Newell aimed a kick and Morsy right in front of the referee and gave him the easiest decision of the afternoon. However, Britt Assombalonga sealed the victory from the penalty spot after Mark Little was bought down.

A great trophy victory for Peterborough who will hope that they will be lifting another one in North London in just under 2 months time.
