Manchester United: Will There Be Any Trophies in 2014?

For Manchester United fans, I think the less said about their season the better. However, the remarkable change in performances and results since David Moyes took over is certainly a shock to the rest of the footballing world. We weren’t expecting him to win the quadruple in his first year but we certainly weren’t expecting them to be quite so bad. We take a look at some of the trophies they’ve had the opportunity to win this season:

Premier League –  

The red devils are currently sitting in 7^th place and are looking more likely to be overtaken by Newcastle or Southampton than they do of making up ground on Everton and Tottenham in the chase for Europe. The top 4 is pretty much out of the question, and therefore no hope of retaining their Premier League trophy that they seemed to win so easily last season.

FA Cup –

Whilst the magic of the FA Cup often brings up surprise results (see Wigan last year), I don’t think anybody was expecting Manchester United to fall at the first hurdle. A home defeat against Swansea ensured that they had no chance of winning this trophy.

League Cup –

Finally a trophy that Manchester United actually got within reasonable distance of winning. However, a lacklustre performance in the two-legged semi-final against Sunderland ensured that the final was not a Manchester Derby and that their rivals would pick up the cup. United drew 3-3 with Sunderland and lost out in one of the worst penalty shoot-out’s ever seen.

Champions League –

For even the most optimistic of fans, there is very little hope of them picking up this trophy come May. They are still in the competition, but they must overcome a 2-0 deficit tomorrow evening to make it through to the quarter-finals where they will be sure to face even tougher opposition. Could David Moyes save his career by turning this around and managing to add to the trophy cabinet?
