Leading the charge in British Tennis – Heather Watson, a rising star to keep your eye on
With Wimbledon just over, there is one girl’s name on everyone’s lips. Despite losing out to Serena Williams, Heather Watson proved that she may have what it takes to go all the way. The young British star has risen to fame fast in the UK. It has been a while since we’ve had a courageous female tennis player such as this one. Now, all eyes are on Heather as she prepares for upcoming competitions. So, how is it that this woman is leading the charge for British tennis?
Who is Heather Watson?
First of all, let’s take a quick look at who Heather Watson is. You must have heard her name by now, and so you should learn a little about her and what her background is. Hailing from Guernsey, this girl showed some real talent from an early age. In fact, she went on to train at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in the USA, where she learned some skills. As a junior player, she won the US Open. That afforded her the US Open Championship Trophy. Winning such a massive title at a young age was a sign of things to come for Heather. She also won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games back in 2008. Now, seven years later, the 23-year-old player is set to take on the tennis world.
Heather’s Wimbledon performance
Heather holds the title for the number one female British tennis player. At this year’s Wimbledon tournament, she beat Magdalena Rybarikova, Alison Riske, and Sloane Stephens. For a while, she was a dominant player in the female section of the competition. After defeating all her opponents, the young player made it to round three. That means that she got to take home an epic sum of £77,000 straight away. Heather’s performances over the course of the tournament showed she is an excellent player.
Heather loses to Serena
In her final round, though, she went up against the force that is Serena Williams. As you know, Serena ranks at number one in the world when it comes to female tennis. The match was as long as it was engaging. When it came down to it, though, Serena beat Heather by just two points. That meant that Heather missed out when it came to the Ladies’ Singles Trophy. This defeat was, of course, disappointing for the player. Still, Heather has not let the loss get her down – she is already training for the next big thing.
What’s next for the young star?
Next month, Heather is ready to compete in the US Open Championship once again. She has a chance to get her hands on the US Open Championship Trophy, which would be another huge success. On Monday, the sports star posted an Instagram of her in the gym. She is not letting her Wimbledon loss deter her. In fact, she is already training for her next tournament. It shows real dedication to the cause. In the Instagram post, fans could see Heather practicing some pull-ups with her trainer. Only time will tell whether she can conquer the US.
