British Swimming Championships 2016, Who do you think will be making a splash?
England, Scotland and Wales’s top swimmers are off to Glasgow for the British Swimming Championships which, this year, are also acting as the Olympic trials. The competition, which takes place at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, from 12 – 17 April 2016, is set to be a thrilling one.
A host of talented competitors will be keen to ensure that they are on the plane to Rio this summer, while places in the 2016 European Aquatics Championships and European Junior Championships are also up for grabs.
So which titles are on offer and which swimmers are most likely to end up on the podium?
What Do the British Swimming Championships Have in Store?
Over the course of the competition, the Home Nations’ elite will be taking part in the following events:
• Men’s 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m and 1500m Freestyle
• Women’s 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m Freestyle
• Men’s 100m and 200m Breaststroke
• Women’s 100m and 200m Breaststroke
• Men’s 100m and 200m Backstroke
• Women’s 100m and 200m Backstroke
• Men’s 100m and 200m Butterfly
• Women’s 100m and 200m Butterfly
• Men’s 200m and 400m Individual Medley
• Women’s 200m and 400m Individual Medley.
Which Swimmers Should You Be Looking Out For?
With many former champions taking to the pool in Glasgow, here are details of just some of the competitors who are in with a chance of picking up one or more swimming awards at this exciting event.
Adam Peaty
A Triple World Champion, having won last year’s Men’s 50m and 100m Breaststroke titles in Kazan, as well as being part of Britain’s title-winning 4 x 100m Mixed Medley Relay team, Adam is sure to be one to watch.
Francesca Halsall
Francesca has been a well-known name in the sport for ten years and she was a member of Britain’s gold medal-winning Mixed 4 x 100m Medley Relay team at the 2015 World Championships. She has also been on the podium at previous Commonwealth, European and British Championships.
Siobhan-Marie O’Connor
The 2015 Women’s 100m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley Champion, Siobhan was also a gold medal winner at the 2015 World Championships, as part of the 4 x 100m Mixed Medley Relay Team. She also won the 200m Individual Medley gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Hannah Miley
An individual medley specialist, Hannah is a former World, European, Commonwealth and British Champion, and has competed in two Olympic Games. She claimed the British Women’s 400m Individual Medley and 200m Butterfly titles in London in 2015.
Liam Tancock
Another double Olympian, Liam has won two World Champion titles, three Commonwealth titles and a British title during his career. He took the silver in both the Men’s 50m Backstroke and 100m Backstroke events at last year’s British Championships.
James Guy
James was the winner of the Men’s 200m Freestyle title and part of the victorious 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay team at the 2015 World Championships. He took home two gold medals from the 2015 British Championships and picked up three British titles the year before.
Jazz Carlin
Bronze medallist in the 2015 World Championships’ Women’s 800m Freestyle, Jazz is a double European Champion and a Commonwealth Champion. She has also taken home eight gold medals from previous British Championship competitions.
Chris Walker-Hebborn
A member of the 2015 World Championship-winning 4 x 100m Mixed Medley Relay team, backstroke specialist Chris also has two Commonwealth, three European and five British title wins to his name.
